HORIZONS gives southeast Missouri youth a chance to become familiar with the University in an educational and fun environment. Faculty develop introductory short courses specifically for academically astute 9-14 year olds from the region. Again, this year we would also like to offer programs for 5-8 year olds in the category of “Little Horizons”.
The 2019 Horizons Program is scheduled for three one-week sessions: June 17-21, June 24-28, and July 8-12. Most courses are scheduled for half-day sessions either in the morning (9 a.m.-noon) or the afternoon (1-4 p.m.). If content requires, all-day (9 a.m.-noon and 1-4 p.m.) sessions are available. Enrollment is limited to 18 unless the instructor requests otherwise.
Instructors earn $550 per short course; $1,100 for an all-day course. For classes with extensive lab work (e.g., chemistry or biology) or with safety issues (e.g., rock climbing & rappelling, caves & spelunking), a request for an assistant is encouraged. Typically, assistants are paid $150 for a half-day course.
A per-student charge is collected to cover all direct costs of the program including instructional materials. Continuing Education will reimburse instructors/departments for materials used in teaching the HORIZONS courses as specified in your contract. Faculty should arrange for classrooms with their department. If special arrangements are needed, contact the Office of Continuing Education (986-6879).
Make it educational. Make it fun. Do not model course after the public/private school curriculum. Youth are not anxious to spend summer in “school.” Think of university curriculum which would appeal to youth. Some successful courses from last year:
- Safari Adventures
- Camp SCRUBS
- Fun-Gingering: Rube Goldberg Machines
Submit a “Course Proposal” form for each HORIZONS course by Wednesday, March 6, 2019. You will be notified of HORIZONS course(s) selections the third week of March. Proposals may be submitted on-line by using the online submission form found below.
